Featured campaigns and backgrounding documents » Make It Australian
Stories have been told on this continent for thousands of generations. We want Australian stories told on Australian screens by us, to us, about us because no-one else will tell stories of the diversity of Australian experiences in our unique Australian landscapes. A renewed commitment is needed from government to bring our stories to our screens.
But story-telling on screen is at risk. Our capacity to make it Australian is at risk because:
- The rules that ensure Australian stories appear on Australian screens must evolve so that new players like Netflix, YouTube, Stan, ISPs and Telcos have obligations to create original local programs.
- Major supporters of Australian stories – Screen Australia and the ABC – have had their funding axed year after year.
- Commercial TV broadcasters want to walk away from any requirement to create children’s content.
- Tax incentives that encourage production in Australia are no longer competitive.
Our success as an industry is not something we can take for granted. Working together as an industry to reflect the diversity of Australian experiences to ourselves and the world, is not something we can take for granted. New content services bring the world’s stories to newer screens.
Our children are growing up surrounded with foreign content and speaking American and British accents. So we need to once again stand together to make it Australian; to see Australian stories on Australian screens. Today, just as we asked in the 1960s and 1970s, we ask the government to ensure that those who provide the services contribute to our stories.
We ask the government to ensure incentives are improved to support our stories.
We ask the government to ensure public funding for public broadcasters and screen agencies.
As it was in the 1960s and 1970s, it is time again to Make it Australian.
Performers, producers, writers, directors and crew are joining forces to campaign for the future of the screen industry. The campaign will be launched on Monday, September 18 at venues around the country. Will you join us? Register now for the event closest to you.
